Monstrous Shark Weighing 700 Pounds Pulled from Connecticut Shore by Fishermen
Man Catchs Potential Record-Breaking Shark Off Connecticut Coast
Ed Lovely, a 46-year-old resident of Hampton, Connecticut, has made a splash in the fishing community with his recent catch. On July 30, Lovely reeled in a 700-pound thresher shark off the coast of Stonington, near Fishers Island, setting a potential new state record for the largest shark caught off Connecticut waters.
The thresher shark, known for its long tail, measured an impressive 16 feet in length. Local media reports suggest that this catch may break the current record, although the exact weight of the previous record-holder is not definitively stated.
Lovely and his fishing partner battled to reel in the massive creature for two hours, with the help of "mental strength" according to Lovely. The struggle was intense, but the pair was able to see the immense size of the shark during the fight.
"It was a monster, the largest one I've ever seen in my life," Lovely described the shark. The initial chaos caused by the shark's strike on Lovely's line soon gave way to awe as the two fishermen marvelled at the sight.
Once the shark was reeled in, it was too large to fit in Lovely's 16-foot-long boat. So, they tied it to the side and drove to the dock, where they were assisted by Lovely's son and a trailer to transport the shark. The process took over six hours in total, with the shark being successfully offloaded at approximately 1 a.m.
The shark's meat has been cut up, filleted, and put in coolers to be shared with friends and family. Lovely is also in communication with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to see if his catch will break the record.
In addition, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is reviewing Lovely's feat for the Marine Trophy Fish Award. Last year, Lovely caught 19 sharks, but this was the first time he had ever seen a Thresher shark this big.
Lovely has no intention of trying to top his current record catch. "Go out there and try it," he advises anyone aspiring to catch a large shark. However, if a shark of similar size were on the line, Lovely would cut the line to prevent further harm to the animal.
