Monsoon intensifies, leading to rain alerts; tropical storm moving closer
The monsoon trough, stretching across the lower Central region, the East, and the lower Northeast of Thailand, is connecting with an active low-pressure cell over the South China Sea. This weather system is causing a moderate southwest monsoon to prevail over the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand, which is expected to strengthen in the coming days.
According to the Thai Meteorological Department, very heavy rainfall is forecast for the southern regions of Thailand on Monday, potentially leading to flooding and strong waves. Isolated heavy rain is likely across the country, with isolated very heavy rain possible in the East and on the west coast of the South.
In light of these conditions, authorities have urged residents in these areas to be cautious of heavy rainfall accumulation, which may cause flash floods and overflows. All vessels are advised to navigate with caution and avoid thundershowers.
The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rain across the country. In the lower Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, waves may range from 1-2 metres, rising above 2 metres in areas experiencing thundershowers.
Elsewhere, in the North, scattered thundershowers are forecast for Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, and Phetchabun.
Meanwhile, a tropical depression over eastern Philippines is expected to intensify into a tropical storm in the coming days. The system is forecast to make landfall in southern China around September 19-20.
Sea conditions are expected to be rough, with waves in the upper Andaman Sea reaching around 2 metres. Residents and travellers are advised to stay informed and exercise caution as this weather system continues to develop.
