Monsoon Draws Near to Kerala; Intense Rains Lash Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Mild Showers in Rajasthan
Weather Forecast Across India: A Mixed Bag of Conditions
India is gearing up for a diverse weather pattern over the coming days, with various regions experiencing different weather conditions.
Heatwave Relief for Northwest India
Residents of Delhi will welcome a brief respite from the scorching heat, as light rain, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures are expected until May 25. Meanwhile, the northwestern region, including Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, will experience varying weather conditions.
Intense Rainfall in Western and Southern India
On the other hand, western and southern India are bracing for intense rainfall. A low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea is set to intensify, potentially leading to widespread rain in India's west coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast extremely heavy showers in Konkan & Goa from May 23 to 24 and in Coastal Karnataka on May 24. Southern India is also set to receive widespread rainfall over the week, with Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema experiencing thundersqualls with gusty winds.
Heatwave Persists in West Rajasthan
West Rajasthan is experiencing the most intense heatwave conditions, likely continuing until May 26. Duststorms are also a possibility in this region.
Monsoon Activity in Kerala
The current weather pattern in Kerala indicates a pattern of alternating heavy showers and sunshine, continuing till the end of August 2025. While the monsoon rains have eased in intensity, localized heavy rain and lightning remain concerns. The IMD predicts isolated heavy rainfall events in Kerala toward the end of August (26th and 27th), with light to moderate rainfall more broadly spread in adjacent regions.
Weather Advisories and Risks
Moderate flash flood risks and localized flooding, as well as the possibility of landslides and damage to vulnerable structures, have been issued for Kerala. Agricultural impacts, such as damage to standing crops and crops in the maturity stage, are also a concern. Advisories have been issued to avoid waterlogged and vulnerable areas and to monitor traffic disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.
Rainfall Across Central and Eastern India
Madhya Maharashtra is expected to witness isolated extremely heavy rainfall on May 24. Maharashtra and Gujarat will witness widespread rainfall and thunderstorms, particularly from May 23 to 28. Vidarbha and parts of Jharkhand may experience isolated heavy rain, while Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and other central-eastern states are forecast to receive moderate rainfall with occasional thundersqualls.
Northeast India and Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are under the watch for heavy spells. The Northeast will continue to receive widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning through the week.
As the Southwest Monsoon weakens but remains active over Kerala, intermittent showers are expected due to localized cloud formation and recent meteorological conditions, rather than a complete end to the monsoon phase in late August 2025.
- The weather forecast suggests that northern regions such as Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, will experience varying weather conditions, including weather-forecasting of thunderstorms and cooler temperatures, while Delhi will have a brief respite from the scorching heat.
- The India Meteorological Department has forecast extremely heavy showers in Konkan & Goa and Coastal Karnataka driven by a low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea, posing a challenge for weather-forecasting and causing concern for intense rainfall in western and southern India.
