Money rains down as the start of the SportPesa League approaches, with a Sh20 million prize up for grabs

The much-anticipated 2025-2026 SportPesa League is set to commence this Friday, marking a new era for Kenyan football. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has injected Sh10 million into the prize pool, doubling the total to a record Sh20 million.

The league's opening match will take place at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, with KCB and Tusker squaring off at 6pm. Both teams are eager to make a strong start in the new season.

Defending champions Gor Mahia will begin their title defense against Bidco United on Sunday at Kasarani Stadium. The same day, Murang’a Seal will face Ulinzi Stars at St. Sebastian Park, while Kariobangi Sharks will take on Bandari at the Kasarani Annex.

AFC Leopards will clash with Sofapaka on Saturday at Ulinzi Sports Complex, and Shabana will host APS Bomet at Gusii Stadium. The opening round will close on Monday with Mathare United taking on Posta Rangers at Kasarani Stadium.

The increased prize money is expected to lift standards on the pitch and encourage clubs to invest more in player development, infrastructure, and youth systems. FKF President Hussein Mohamed described the increased prize money as a new dawn for Kenyan football.

SportPesa, the league's title sponsor, has contributed an equal amount, totaling Sh10 million. The runners-up will take home Sh3 million, while the third-placed team will receive Sh2 million. The league champions will pocket a significant Sh15 million.

The aim, according to SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri, is to make the SportPesa League highly competitive. Many players, clubs, and fans believe that the increased prize money is a step in the right direction for Kenyan football. With the new season underway, the excitement is palpable, and the stage is set for an enthralling league.
