Paris - German Tennis Player Daniel Altmaier Reaches French Open Round of 16 for the Second Time

In a heated third-round match at Stade Roland Garros, Daniel Altmaier, a 26-year-old professional tennis player from Germany, overcame Serbian opponent Hamad Medjedovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2, securing his spot in the tournament's round of 16 for the second time, following his 2020 performance.

The victory marks Altmaier as the first German player to advance to the top 16 at the French Open. The match, played under sweltering temperatures exceeding 30°C, saw Medjedovic receiving treatment during a 10-minute break in the first set, complaining of dizziness and leaning on the net for support.

Initially, Altmaier struggled with Medjedovic's aggressive, high-risk playing style but managed to break his serve and take a 4-2 lead. However, Altmaier then lost his rhythm and dropped four consecutive games, allowing Medjedovic to win the first set. "That was a bit uncomfortable," Altmaier said about the extended break. "After that, the set went pretty quickly, which was quite annoying."

Medjedovic left the court to change his sweat-soaked clothes, and Altmaier used the break to regroup. He played more calmly and regained control of the match, breaking Medjedovic's serve again to tie the set at 3-3. Altmaier maintained his lead and won the second set.

Medjedovic appeared even more exhausted, and Altmaier broke his serve early to take a 2-1 lead in the third set. He then broke Medjedovic's serve again and secured the match with his sixth match point.

Altmaier's run to the round of 16 confirms his upward trend this year. The German No. 2 has announced his intention to be aggressive in this season and is aiming to be among the seeded players at the Australian Open next year, which would require him to be among the top 32 players. With his performances at Stade Roland Garros, he is already set to rise into the top 60, his best ranking so far being No. 47 in the fall of 2023.

Up next for Altmaier is a crucial match against Frances Tiafoe from the USA in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Alongside world No. 3 Alexander Zverev, who plays his third-round match against Italian Flavio Cobolli on Saturday afternoon, Altmaier is the only remaining German player in the singles competition.

Daniel Altmaier's career has been marked by resilient performances and notable upsets at major tournaments, especially on clay at the French Open. His future goals include going deeper in Grand Slam events, with the 2025 French Open representing a key opportunity to establish himself among the elite players on the ATP Tour.

In the ongoing French Open, Daniel Altmaier, the resilient German tennis player, is aiming to go further in Grand Slam events, following his impressive run to the round of 16 for the second time, which he also achieved in 2020. This love for the sport extended to the clay courts of the French Open, where he hopes to make notable upsets and potentially claim victory, aspiring to be among the elite players on the ATP Tour.
