Shropshire Council Announces £2.62m Funding for Housing Afghan Refugees

Shropshire Council has announced a significant investment of £2.62m to provide temporary accommodation for Afghan refugees, as well as addressing wider homelessness pressures in the region.

In round two of the funding, the council has been allocated £1.2m from the government, with an additional £1.42m coming from 'section 106' funds and borrowing. This funding will be used to purchase 10 new properties, adding to the 30 homes provided from round one of the programme.

The new homes will range from two to four bedrooms and are intended to provide settled accommodation for Afghan refugees. Nine of these new homes will be offered to households currently in bridging hotels in the West Midlands.

Mark Barrow, director of place at Shropshire Council, stated that it is important for the council to assist in providing settled accommodation for Afghan refugees. He emphasized the need to support these individuals as they rebuild their lives in a new country.

It is worth noting that Shropshire does not have any bridging hotels for Afghan refugees, but families are currently being accommodated elsewhere in the West Midlands.

The council aims to complete the purchases by 2024. Once the immediate need to help refugee families affected by conflicts in Ukraine and Afghanistan has been completed, all 40 homes will be used to alleviate wider homelessness pressures.

However, it should be mentioned that the organization that provided funding alongside the government for the 40 housing units is not explicitly mentioned in the provided search results.

This investment marks a significant step forward in Shropshire's commitment to supporting those in need and providing a safe and secure home for all.
