In a grand display of hospitality, former US President Donald Trump returned to the UK for his second state visit, this time meeting with King Charles III and other members of the royal family. The visit, which took place behind closed doors, was filled with ceremonial pomp and traditional British pageantry.

Upon arrival at Windsor, Trump was greeted by Prince William and Catherine. The Trumps and the royals exchanged gifts, with Britain presenting Trump a book to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, and Trump gifting Charles a replica of a sword owned by President Dwight Eisenhower.

King Charles III praised Trump's 'personal commitment' to seeking peace at the start of the event. The King and Trump laughed and joked as the US leader inspected troops at Windsor, while over 1,300 members of the British military, including 120 horses, feted Trump during a ceremonial guard of honour. A 41-gun salute was fired simultaneously from six First World War-era guns on the castle's east lawn and at the Tower of London.

During the visit, Trump laid a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor and viewed a collection of US-related items, including a letter from President Abraham Lincoln to Queen Victoria. The Trumps also had a private meeting with Prince William and Catherine, which was described as 'warm and friendly.'

The UK government is trying to keep Trump onside during a host of international crises, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is hoping to leave Trump feeling the warm glow of royal soft power. However, Starmer faces political troubles at home, after sacking his UK ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, over his links to Epstein. The spectre of Jeffrey Epstein is causing domestic headaches for both Trump and Starmer.

Trump's changeability on various issues has caused global turmoil, but his visit to the UK was described by him as 'one of the highest honours of my life.' This visit, much like his first in 2019 with Queen Elizabeth II, underscores the enduring special relationship between the US and the UK.

On the second day of the visit, Starmer will host Trump at his country residence, Chequers. The visit, while controversial, is a testament to the historical ties between the two nations and the desire to maintain a strong alliance in the face of global challenges.
