Monarch endorses Prime Minister Anutin's proposed cabinet members
In a significant political development, Thailand's Constitutional Court dismissed former premier Paetongtarn Shinawatra from office last month, paving the way for a new government to take charge. On September 5, the Bhumjaithai Party leader, Anutin Charnvirakul, was chosen as Thailand's 32nd prime minister.
Anutin has pledged to address a number of pressing issues, with a particular focus on tackling the high cost of living and elevated household debt levels. He has also promised to address a currency rally that is threatening the country's exports and tourism.
The Bhumjaithai Party, with a minority in Parliament, has garnered the support of the opposition People's Party (PPLE), which holds 143 seats. The PPLE supports the government on the strict condition that the parliament is dissolved within four months and new elections are held; they do not participate in the government itself.
The new cabinet, endorsed by the King, includes several key ministers. Auttapol Rerkpiboon serves as the Energy Minister, Pipat Ratchakitprakan is the Transport Minister, Suphajee Suthumpun is the Commerce Minister, Ekniti Nitithanprapas is the Finance Minister, and Sirasak Phuangketkeow is the Foreign Affairs Minister.
Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit is the defence minister, supported by his deputy, Lt Gen Adul Boonthamchareon. Legal expert Borwornsak Uwanno is one of the deputy prime ministers.
The policy statement to Parliament, the final step before ministers can assume their duties, will take place before an oath-taking ceremony for the new cabinet. Following this, the government has four months to present its policy plans, after which the House must be dissolved, paving the way for a new election likely in February or March.
