Moldova's Pro-European Party PAS Wins Big, Securing EU Path
Moldova's pro-European party, Action and Solidarity (PAS), led by President Maia Sandu, has won the parliamentary election, securing over 50% of the votes. The party has surprised many by defeating the pro-Russian Patriotic Block, which received only 24.17% of the votes.
The election results mark a significant shift in Moldova's political landscape. Traditionally torn between an orientation towards the EU and Russia, the Moldovan people have now clearly favoured the pro-European course. President Sandu's victory can be attributed to the support of Moldovans living in the EU, who have consistently backed the pro-Western stance.
The OSCE observers praised the smooth organisation of the vote, ensuring the legitimacy of the results. The EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul have pledged their support to Moldova on its path to EU accession. Neighboring EU member Romania and Ukraine have also congratulated PAS on their victory and welcomed the defeat of pro-Russian forces.
With PAS maintaining more than 50 seats in parliament despite losing its constitutional majority, Moldova's course towards EU integration is expected to continue. President Sandu's joy at securing the path to the EU reflects the will of the Moldovan people, who have spoken loudly and clearly in favour of closer ties with the European Union.
