Moldova's Pro-European Course Secured After PAS Election Victory
Moldova's pro-European course has been reaffirmed after the ruling party Action and Solidarity (PAS) led by President Maia Sandu secured a victory in the parliamentary elections. The party won 54 out of 101 seats, maintaining a majority despite some losses. Sandu expressed joy that the path to EU integration is secured, while the pro-Russian Patriotic Block came in second with 27 seats.
The election results reflect Moldova's traditional tug-of-war between the EU and Russia. PAS's victory, with 50.20% of the vote, is largely thanks to Moldovans living in the EU who support the pro-Western course. Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov criticized the election, complaining about the limited number of polling stations for Moldovans in Russia. However, international observers praised the smooth conduct of the election despite the challenging environment.
Neighboring countries Romania and Ukraine congratulated PAS on their victory and welcomed the defeat of pro-Russian forces. President Sandu's address to the European Parliament before the election underscored Moldova's commitment to EU integration, a stance supported by the European Union.
Despite losing its constitutional majority, PAS will continue to hold more than 50 seats in parliament, ensuring President Sandu's pro-European course remains the dominant force in Moldovan politics. The EU supports Moldova's EU candidacy, while Russia's influence and disinformation attempts persist as a counterforce. The election results signal a continued orientation towards the EU, though Moldova's political landscape remains complex and divided.
