Moldovan Pro-Russia Politician Receives Imprisonment Sentence

In a bold move that has sparked international controversy, a Moldovan court sentenced regional politician Evghenia Gutul to seven years in jail, a decision that has been strongly condemned by Moscow. The sentencing is related to charges of illegal party financing for the "Shor" party, a pro-Russian faction in Moldova.

Moscow views the jailing as politically motivated repression targeting pro-Russian factions. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the verdict as "open and arguably unlawful pressure" that suppresses the opposition and violates democratic norms in Moldova. Russian officials, including a State Duma representative, have issued sharp warnings, with some even threatening military posturing near Moldova’s breakaway Transnistrian region.

Evghenia Gutul, who leads the autonomous Gagauzia region known for its pro-Russian stance, has been a critic of Moldova's pro-EU government. In a post on Telegram, she denounced the verdict as "political reprisal" and "an attempt to intimidate the residents of Gagauzia who have the courage to vote against the ruling party's wishes." Her supporters shouted "shame" and "down with Maia Sandu" when she was taken into a police van.

Moldovan officials, however, have rejected Russia’s condemnation as interference, reaffirming Moldova’s sovereignty and democratic process. The ruling against Gutul comes ahead of parliamentary elections set to be held on September 28. The pro-EU side is currently in power in Moldova.

It's important to note that the "Shor" party is named after exiled pro-Moscow oligarch Ilan Shor, who was previously found guilty of fraud in Moldova. Gutul, who was last received in Russia by President Vladimir Putin in 2024, has been a vocal supporter of closer ties with Russia.

Meanwhile, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement has spoken about Moldova, Ukraine, and the Western Balkans accession, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and the rule of law in these countries. The sentencing of Evghenia Gutul has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Moldova and the potential for political instability in the region.
