Moldova pursues EU membership aspirations
The Republic of Moldova, a small European nation slightly smaller than Switzerland, is gearing up for its presidential runoff election on November 3. The incumbent, pro-EU President Maia Sandu, faces an unspecified opponent, with the identities of the other candidates yet to be determined.
Moldova's potential accession to the European Union (EU) has been a topic of discussion, with the EU expressing its willingness to engage in talks. However, the EU has made it clear that Moldova still has significant work to do, particularly in the area of reducing corruption, a common challenge for many countries.
The EU, a political and economic union of 27 European countries including Germany, possesses the power to make laws that apply to all member countries. Its main office is located in Brussels, Belgium. The EU was formed after World War II to prevent future conflicts in Europe.
The EU has expressed concerns about potential Russian interference and intimidation in the upcoming election. Russia, a large country spanning both Asia and Europe, with Moscow as its capital, is a country of interest for the EU. In some countries, the President holds significant political power, such as the USA and France, while in others, the head of government wields more influence, like in Germany.
Interestingly, the President is the head of state in many countries, including Russia. The majority of the population in the Republic of Moldova lives off agriculture, making it a country deeply rooted in its agricultural traditions.
A recent referendum in Moldova showed that most people voted in favor of joining the EU in the future. Despite the challenges ahead, Moldova's pursuit of EU membership continues, with the upcoming presidential election serving as a significant step in this journey.
