Modern Museum of Art appoints Christophe Cherix as its latest director
New Director Announced for the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York has appointed Christophe Cherix as its new director, effective from September 2025. Cherix, who has been with MoMA since 2007, currently serves as the museum's chief curator of drawings and prints.
Born in Switzerland, Cherix joined MoMA after serving as curator of the prints at the Museé d'art et d'histoire in Geneva. His extensive background in the art world, with a focus on curatorship of drawings and prints, aligns perfectly with MoMA's mission. In 2013, he was named MoMA's Robert Lehman Foundation chief curator of drawings and prints.
During his tenure at MoMA, Cherix has overseen important acquisitions and mounted exhibitions, including last year's critically-acclaimed ED RUSCHA / NOW THEN. He aims to ensure that MoMA's unique ability to navigate the ever-evolving present continues to thrive.
Cherix emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of artists from around the globe and engaging the broadest audiences, both onsite and online. His top priority as the new director is to support MoMA's exceptional staff.
The appointment comes after a six-month international search following the announcement by the museum's current director, Glenn Lowery, that he would be stepping down from MoMA's top post. Lowery, who had planned to step down in September, confirmed the appointment along with the museum's board.
The announcement was made today and reported by the New York Times. It is in the context of the museum approaching its centennial, a significant milestone in its history. Cherix stated that MoMA has long been a leader in embracing new forms of expression and he looks forward to continuing this tradition.
This is the first statement made by Christophe Cherix since his appointment as the director of MoMA. The appointment marks a new era for one of the world's most influential museums of modern and contemporary art.
