Modern Love Story Unfolds in Hampstead

In the heart of London lies Hampstead Village, famed for its picturesque Heath, a unique blend of nature and urban life that offers a breathtaking view over the city. This idyllic setting serves as the backdrop for the upcoming film, "Hampstead," a life-affirming tale about love and unconventional living.

The film, directed by Joel Hopkins and written by Robert Festinger, follows the story of Donald Horner, played by Brendan Gleeson, a man who has lived on the edge of the Heath for 17 years but faces eviction. Gleeson, known for his powerful performances, notes that Hampstead is a place where nature reserves overlook a vast capital city, and it's maintained as such for ordinary people.

Emily Walters, an American widow living in the village, played by Diane Keaton, becomes an unlikely ally in Donald's fight. Keaton, with her background in comedy, brings out the lighter side of her character, while Gleeson's approach to Donald is described as almost Shakespearian. The varying styles in which Keaton and Gleeson bring their characters to life generate the tension needed to propel the drama and comedy of the script.

For Hopkins, Hampstead is another character in the film. He finds the unique neighbourhood within London and its village feel within the big city appealing. The wildlife on the Heath is husbanded but allowed to exist, making it a very unusual and protected place. This element of wildness, unlike the more polished Royal Parks such as Green and Regent's Park, attracted Hopkins to the location.

Gleeson was immediately attracted to the role of Donald and was fascinated about what would lead someone to live such a radical life. He felt there was a weakness his character felt in his own character, which was that he'd run away from various situations in his life, but he'd found a way to make it work for him and he also found a way not to be a burden to other people or to himself.

The film is produced by Robert Bernstein and Douglas Rae of Ecosse Films. Rob Festinger, who received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for "In The Bedroom," is not only the writer but also the director of the film. Festinger is best-known for directing "Last Chance Harvey," starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson.

"Hampstead" promises to be a heartwarming and thought-provoking film that showcases the beauty of Hampstead Heath and the resilience of its inhabitants. With the stellar cast and the experienced team behind it, this film is sure to be a must-watch.
