Moderate Leader Pawar Endorses Prime Minister Modi amid Age Controversy

In the bustling city of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India, political veteran Sharad Pawar made a significant statement during his 85th birthday celebrations. The founder of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and a former Union minister extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, and expressed his support regarding the ongoing debate about political leaders stepping aside after turning 75.

Pawar, who is known for maintaining cordial ties with leaders across the political spectrum despite ideological differences, invited Prime Minister Modi to his birthday event. In a letter penned for the occasion, Pawar wished Modi good health, happiness, and a long life. The Prime Minister attended the event but chose to refrain from making any political remarks.

The retirement debate has been a hot topic in Indian politics lately. The Congress party has targeted the BJP and RSS, accusing them of forcing senior leaders like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi to retire after they crossed the 75-year mark. Pawar commented on this issue, acknowledging that the RSS had previously published statements suggesting retirement at 75, but now they claim they haven't said it. He also stated that some people have clarified they never said nor discussed the retirement at 75, and that it is unnecessary to insist on them.

Pawar, currently 85 and still actively working, stated that he has no moral authority to ask anyone, including PM Modi, to step aside due to age. He recalled that he chose not to politicize his 75th birthday, and wished for there to be no bitterness in politics on occasions like birthdays.

Pawar, raised with the values of Yashwantrao Chavan, has often been a unifying force in Indian politics. His stance on the retirement debate reflects his commitment to promoting a more mature and respectful political discourse. Despite the ongoing debate, Pawar's gesture of extending a birthday greeting to Modi serves as a reminder that politics, even in its most contentious moments, can still foster a spirit of camaraderie and mutual respect.
