Fire at the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba: A Limited and Localized Damage

A fire that broke out at the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on Friday evening has caused limited damage, with the majority of the monument remaining intact. The fire was swiftly brought under control, thanks to a well-executed fire protection plan.

The fire, which started around 9 p.m. local time, is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in a cleaning machine that was parked inside the building. The blaze quickly spread to a chapel in the Almanzor nave, known as the Chapel of the Annunciation, causing the roof of the chapel to collapse.

However, the fire protection plan, which was revised in response to the devastating fire at Notre-Dame in 2019, proved effective. Several fire trucks were on the scene in a very short time, ensuring the fire was extinguished quickly. As a result, the damage is localized and limited, with the affected area confined to about 50 to 60 square meters in the interior.

The Chapel of the Annunciation and the adjoining chapels suffered smoke damage, affecting altarpieces and some works of art. The affected area is currently cordoned off to the public, but the rest of the vast interior and the majority of the monument remain open.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is a remarkable architectural masterpiece, originally built as a mosque in the 8th century and converted into a cathedral in the 13th century. It is famous for its endless rows of red and white horseshoe arches, supported by over 850 columns. In the 16th century, a Renaissance nave was built within the Islamic prayer room.

The mayor of Cordoba, Jose Maria Bellido, stated that the damages are not a catastrophe. The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba will be accessible to the public again on Saturday morning, except for the fire-damaged zone, which remains restricted for safety and restoration assessment.

Regular fire drills have taken place in the Cathedral of Cordoba in recent years, ensuring that the fire protection measures are always up-to-date and effective. Despite the unfortunate incident, the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba, a significant building in Spain, continues to stand as a testament to the rich cultural history of the region.
