Moderate discussions scheduled between U.S. President Trump and India's Prime Minister Modi next month, according to recent reports.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the United States next month, according to reports from the Indian Express newspaper. The visit is likely to take place during the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, but there is no confirmed meeting scheduled with President Donald Trump to discuss trade and tariff issues.

The annual meeting of heads of state and government at the UN General Assembly will be held from September 23-29. The talks, if they occur, are aimed at addressing trade and tariff issues between the two countries.

Reports from 2025 indicate that Modi was likely to meet Trump around the time of the UN General Assembly, primarily to discuss trade and tariffs. However, there was no official confirmation at the time of the reports. These reports pertain to a potential meeting in 2025, not 2020.

Recent developments in the trade talks between New Delhi and Washington have not been favourable. After five rounds of negotiations, the talks have collapsed. The disagreement in negotiations stemmed from India's refusal to open its farm and dairy sectors, as well as continuing to buy Russian oil.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that several large trade agreements are still waiting to be completed, including with Switzerland and India. Bessent expressed optimism, stating that the administration is in a good position to reach substantial terms with all major countries.

However, President Trump recently announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods as a penalty for New Delhi's continued buying of Russian oil. This penalty has increased to 50%, making it one of the highest levies on any US trading partner.

Despite the ongoing trade tensions, Bessent hopes the Trump administration can wrap up its trade negotiations by the end of October. He mentioned that New Delhi has been "a bit recalcitrant" in talks with Washington.

Reuters could not immediately verify the information about Modi's visit outside business hours. The exact dates of Modi's visit have not been specified in the report. The report does not mention any specific outcomes or agreements expected from the talks between Modi and Trump regarding trade and tariff issues.
