Stirring Up Passion: A Record 115,000 Poles in Germany Vote in the Presidential Election

Mobilization efforts initiated by the Polish Presidency in Germany

Get ready for some high stakes politics! The second round of the Polish presidential election is causing a wave among Poles living in Germany: a whopping 115,000 individuals with Polish citizenship have registered to vote here, as reported by the Funke media group after their request to the Polish embassy. You can cast your ballot at one of the 54 polling stations scattered throughout the country.

This surge in interest significantly exceeds the turnout for the previous election, where around 70,000 Poles registered to vote in 2020. Approximately two million people with roots in Poland call Germany home, with roughly 865,000 of them maintaining their Polish citizenship. Sadly, those living abroad can't vote by mail; they must register ahead of time, either online or in person at one of the Polish consulates.

Choosing the Next Leader

The Polish presidential election is a major decision, as voters must pick between the pro-European, liberal candidate Rafal Trzaskowski and the nationalist, EU-skeptic Karol Nawrocki to head their nation. In recent polls, Warsaw Mayor Trzaskowski has edged ahead with 47.4% of the vote, while Nawrocki trails slightly behind at 46.3%.

The president of Poland may wield limited powers but serves as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, sets foreign policy, and can introduce or veto bills. A win for Trzaskowski would bolster support for the liberal-conservative Prime Minister Donald Tusk, furthering his economic reforms. On the other hand, a victory for Nawrocki could continue the policy of obstruction, as outgoing President Andrzej Duda has often used his veto power since Tusk took office. Nawrocki might also question Poland's commitment to supporting Ukraine.

Polling stations close at 9 PM, and we’ll see an exit poll shortly afterwards. However, we won’t know the final results until Monday.

Though we don't have specific data on why more Poles living in Germany are participating in the 2025 election, a few factors may contribute to increased turnout:- Heightened Awareness: Greater awareness and engagement among Polish citizens living abroad could explain the higher participation.- Easier Access: Improved voting procedures and accessibility for overseas voters may also encourage more people to vote.- Compelling Race: The close race between the candidates might have inspired more Poles to cast their votes, both domestically and abroad.

Should Trzaskowski or Nawrocki triumph, there can be significant repercussions for Poland's relations with the EU:- Nationalist Policies: If nationalist Karol Nawrocki wins, Poland's stance towards the EU could shift, leading to potential conflicts and changes in internal politics.- Deep Divisions: Regardless of the winner, the close race underscores deep societal divisions within Poland, which could impact future political strategies and policies.

The outcome of the election might also influence Germany's relationship with Poland and its stance on EU policies:- Border Relations: A more nationalist Poland could impact Germany's relationship with Poland, potentially affecting how Germany approaches EU initiatives.- European Dynamics: The shift in Poland's political direction could ripple throughout Europe, potentially altering Germany's perspective on EU policies and relationships with other European countries.

These implications are speculative without specific data on the increased turnout of Polish voters in Germany. Nevertheless, the close race and the potential impact on Poland-Germany relations and broader European politics make this election a fascinating spectacle to watch.

The Commission's involvement in the proposed directive on protecting workers from the risks associated with the use of electronic equipment could reflect broader political trends, as the rising interest among Polish citizens living in Germany to vote in the presidential election might indicate increased engagement with general-news topics, including international politics.

Should the pro-European, liberal candidate emerge victorious in the Polish presidential election, potential shifts in Poland's stance towards the EU and its relationships with neighboring countries, such as Germany, could significantly impact European dynamics and the general news landscape.
