Mobile mayoral candidate Drummond gets a Historic Boost from Small Donations before the Runoff

In the upcoming Mobile mayoral runoff on September 23rd, Barbara Drummond aims to make history as the city's first Black woman mayor. As she prepares to face her opponent, Spiro Cheriogotis, once again, Drummond's campaign has announced a significant milestone - breaking the record for the most individual donations by a municipal candidate in Mobile's history.

Drummond's opponent, Cheriogotis, has outraised her during the general election and continues to do so ahead of the runoff. However, the contrast in fundraising strategy between the two candidates is indicative of a deeper contrast between their visions for Mobile's future.

Drummond's campaign has received contributions from 2,321 individual donors, a record number for a municipal candidate in Mobile. The median donation was approximately $50, showing a broad base of support from working families, teachers, retirees, small business owners, and everyday people from every corner of Mobile.

"I am completely humbled and energized by the grassroots support for my campaign," Drummond said. "This is what a people-powered movement looks like, and it's the coalition that will carry me to victory in the runoff."

According to Drummond's campaign manager, Adline Clarke, the campaign is fueled by the people of Mobile, not a handful of big checks. The high number of individual contributors is evidence of Drummond's wide-reaching grassroots support.

Cheriogotis' campaign, on the other hand, has relied heavily on large donations from corporations and PACs. Major donors to Cheriogotis' opponent include local business leaders, real estate developers, and political action committees focused on economic development and law enforcement interests.

Drummond considers the record not just about campaign contributions, but about thousands of people investing in a shared vision for a Mobile that works for everyone. The record number of donations proves that Drummond's message of revitalizing every neighborhood, creating real economic opportunity, and leading with experience is resonating.
