Mob brutally assaults three alleged members of Awami League faction at Dhanmondi 32
In the heart of Dhanmondi, a bustling area in the capital city of Bangladesh, a disturbing incident unfolded on the night of August 14, 2021. A group of people gathered at Dhanmondi 32, a site of historical significance as the location of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination.
The crowd, allegedly stirred by suspicions that three individuals were activists of the banned Awami League, launched a brutal assault on them. Among the victims was a rickshaw puller named Azizur Rahman, who was beaten while carrying flowers to pay respects at Dhanmondi 32.
The assault took place between 8:30pm and 9pm, with the crowd chanting slogans such as "AL agents beware" and "Zia's soldiers, unite and fight," suggesting a potential political divide. The reasons for suspecting the victims as Awami League workers were not clearly explained at the scene.
One of the victims, Azizur Rahman, was later handed over to the police and subsequently arrested. He was granted bail by a Dhaka court. Two more individuals were also beaten by the crowd and later handed over to the police.
Masud Alam, the Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division, has stated that they will verify the allegations and release the innocent if found. If guilty, legal action will be taken, according to Masud Alam.
The incidents at Dhanmondi 32 continue to unfold, with further developments yet to be reported. The gathering at Dhanmondi 32 was reportedly called by Sheikh Hasina's son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The first altercation began when someone at Dhanmondi 32 was showing someone a video call with images of Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The man showing the video call was beaten by the crowd.
The police arrived and took the beaten man into custody, along with the three individuals who were beaten by the crowd. Three individuals are currently in police custody following the incidents at Dhanmondi 32.
