MMA fighter from Britain faces uncertainty as GFL promotion with UFC veterans falls quiet, confirms confusion: "I'm clueless about the situation"
In the midst of high expectations, Stuart Austin signed with the Global Fight League (GFL) early in the year, brimming with excitement.
Flash-forward to now, four months later, and Austin hasn't stepped foot in the ring for his new promotion. The GFL's inaugural event was axed, leaving Austin in a puzzling situation with no clear answers.
Rumors swirled this month that the GFL had indefinitely halted its debut event, originally scheduled for May[2]. The double-header was slated to feature heavyweights of the MMA world, such as Tony Ferguson, Paige VanZant, and Urijah Faber, but a statement from the promotion confirmed the cancellation.
The GFL blamed their 'primary investor' for pulling out of their funding commitment, and allowed any athletes signed to the promotion to leave at their own discretion[2]. This sudden turn of events left a multitude of fighters in the lurch, many of whom chose to part ways with the promotion on the day.
Meanwhile, Austin, one of only three fighters to notch a victory over UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall, is left in the dark.
"We've essentially been told if we want to be released, we can," he said in a conversation with talkSPORT, admitting he'd learned about the GFL's demise in the same manner as everyone else.
"I don't know what's happening. I don't know whether a show is going to happen or not. Nothing's been made clear," he continued.
"I've not had an email from them about anything. I know some people have been asked about fighting in June, but I haven't. So I guess that's basically it," he concluded[1].
Meanwhile, MMA fans have been expressing their displeasure and sympathy for the fighters left in limbo. Critics argue that the GFL is taking money from investors without a clear plan or dedication to long-term event creation[4].
Despite the setbacks, GFL founder Darren Owen remains optimistic, asserting plans to relaunch in June[3]. Whether or not these intentions will come to fruition remains to be seen.

### Fuming MMA fans slam GFL for abandoned events and Brexit brawl dramaGiven the historical context, the GFL's current predicament is far from surprising[5]. The GFL initially postponed its first two shows due to financial issues related to a primary investor not fulfilling funding obligations[1]. However, further reports indicate that these events were ultimately cancelled, casting significant doubt over the future of the promotion[2][3]. Despite the setbacks, founder Darren Owen has expressed intentions to move forward with the team-based mixed martial arts promotion[1]. The financial mismanagement and lack of new event dates have raised concerns about whether the GFL will be able to successfully launch and maintain operations[2][3].
