The Ongoing Saga of Pete Rose's Hall of Fame Chances

MLB Urged by Donald Trump to Grant Honor to Pete Rose as Pardon Approaches, Trump Calls for Action with Assertive Remark on MLB's Idleness

After dominating the headlines following his showdown with the White House, President Donald Trump found himself back in the spotlight this weekend, this time gracing the sports pages. The president announced that he plans to pardon the late Pete Rose "in the coming weeks."

Trump used Twitter to voice his support for the late Cincinnati Reds great, stating that while Rose shouldn't have bet on baseball, he "only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING." In a scathing tirade, he criticized Major League Baseball (MLB) for its lack of "courage or decency" in not inducting Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame while he was still alive.

Trump has long been an advocate for Rose's induction, even going so far as to tell MLB to induct him "now, before his funeral!" just weeks before his death.

Blame Games and Scathing attack

Rose himself expressed his disappointment about missing out on the Hall of Fame while he was alive, saying, "What good would it do my family if they put me in the Hall of Fame after I die?"

On Saturday, Trump echoed his sentiments, saying, "Baseball, which is dying all over the place, should get off its fat, lazy ass, and elect Pete Rose, even though far too late, into the Baseball Hall of Fame!"

However, it remains unclear what exactly Trump will pardon Rose for, as he made no explicit mention of the case in which the 17-time All-Star admitted to tax evasion charges and served five months in a federal prison.

A Possible Turning Point?

While MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred mulls over a petition lodged by Rose's family to have him removed from the league body's ineligible list, a Hall of Fame spokesperson stated that the process would be more complicated. If MLB were to reinstate Rose, his consideration for induction into Cooperstown must come through the Hall's Era Committee process rather than the Baseball Writers' Association of America vote.

This is because voting rules require that candidates on the BBWAA ballot must have played in the Major Leagues no more than 15 years prior to each election. However, with recent developments, it seems that Rose's chances of earning a spot in the Hall of Fame may finally be on the rise.

Insights:

Rose's gambling controversies and a lifetime ban from MLB have so far prevented him from being considered for the Hall of Fame. However, if the ban is lifted, he would need to go through a special consideration process to be inducted. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is currently evaluating a petition from Rose's family to have him removed from the league's ineligible list. This could potentially pave the way for Rose's reinstatement and Hall of Fame eligibility.

Trump's upcoming pardon of Pete Rose may prompt a reconsideration of Rose's Hall of Fame chances, especially since Major League Baseball (MLB) might reinstate Rose, which would necessitate a sports-analysis of his eligibility through the Era Committee process, rather than the Baseball Writers' Association of America vote, as Rose's gambling controversies and lifetime ban from MLB have so far prevented him from being considered for the Hall of Fame.

Despite the ongoing debate about Rose's eligibility, Trump vocalized his support for Rose's induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, expressing disdain for MLB's lack of "courage or decency" in refusing to induct Rose while he was alive, and advocating for Rose's inclusion in the Hall even after his death.
