MLB team, the Miami Marlins, reinstates offensive lineman Dane Myers; assign Mervis and Simon to being available for other teams.

Miami (AP) - The Miami Marlins announced a series of roster moves on Friday, with outfielder Dane Myers being reinstated from the injured list and first baseman Matt Mervis being designated for assignment.

Myers, who had been sidelined since May 12 due to a right oblique strain, is back after making a rehab appearance with Triple-A Jacksonville. Mervis, who was one of the Marlins' top performers during the first month of the season, was designated for assignment.

Acquired from the Chicago organization last December, Mervis struggled over the past month, posting a batting average of .111, with no home runs and no RBIs. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough cited Mervis' offensive struggles as the reason for the move, stating that "it was time to shift gears a little bit and give some other guys a chance to come up here and see if they can be a spark and help us out."

In response to these roster changes, the Marlins called up infielder Jack Winkler and outfielder Heriberto Hernandez from the minors. Meanwhile, infielder Graham Pauley was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, and Ronny Simon, a versatile infielder/outfielder, was designated for assignment.

Simon, who had joined the Marlins in 2023, committed three errors in a game against San Diego, which sparked an emotional reaction and his subsequent replacement. Despite his contributions, which included driving in five runs and hitting .234, Simon's struggles on the field, both defensively and offensively, appeared to precipitate the decision to rearrange the roster.

Comparatively, Simon had a stellar start to the season in Triple-A Jacksonville, posting a .962 OPS in 15 games. However, his major league struggles and defensive miscues have led the Marlins to seek more reliable options both in the field and at the plate.

Xavier Edwards is also expected to return to the team following a left mid back strain. Edwards will shift from shortstop to second base upon his return, while rookie catcher Liam Hicks may join him at first base. Edwards, who began his time with the Marlins at second base, has had more success at the position and is expected to quickly reacclimate to game speed.
