MLB speculation: Colorado Rockies fostering interest in involving New York Mets in Nolan Arenado trade discussions
The New York Mets have been making waves this offseason, signing free agents Trevor May and James McCann, and attracting trade interest. However, a potential blockbuster trade is causing a stir in the baseball world - a hypothetical deal involving Nolan Arenado, the discontented superstar third baseman of the Colorado Rockies.
Steve Cohen, the richest owner in baseball with a net worth of $14.6 billion, officially took ownership of the Mets in November. Cohen's deep pockets have led to speculation that the Mets might be willing to take on Arenado's six-year, $260 million contract, although the Rockies would need to eat a chunk of it for a trade to be worthwhile for the Mets.
Jon Morosi reported that the Colorado Rockies want to engage in trade talks with the Mets regarding Arenado. However, the timing of the Rockies scouring the trade market for Arenado is not ideal due to his long-term contract. The asking price for Arenado is likely to be high, and any hypothetical trade involving him would not be a simple straight-up trade involving just players and prospects.
Nolan Arenado has an opt-out clause following the 2021 season, but it is unclear whether the Mets would be willing to push back this opt-out for a potential deal. Over the last six seasons, Arenado's 162-game averages include a .926 OPS, 41 home runs, and 126 RBI. His defensive prowess is unquestionable, with eight Gold Glove Awards and four Platinum Glove Awards to his name.
However, Arenado's discontent with the Colorado Rockies due to their failure to create a legitimate contender around him has been well-documented. The Rockies, who have the worst record in MLB in 2025, seem to be showing desperation not to have to deal Arenado to a divisional rival like the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The level of interest from the Mets in a potential Arenado trade is unknown at this time. The Mets lineup, already looking dangerous, could be further bolstered by adding a player like Arenado. But for now, all trade discussions focus on Arenado potentially being traded by his current team, the St. Louis Cardinals, not being reacquired by the Rockies or dealt with the Mets.
