MLB executive from Red Sox discusses minimal trades during deadline, stating, 'We gave it our best shot'
Red Sox Make Limited Moves at MLB Trade Deadline
The 2025 Major League Baseball trade deadline passed on Thursday, and the Boston Red Sox found themselves under scrutiny for their lack of activity. Craig Breslow, the Red Sox's Chief Baseball Officer, defended the team's approach but faced criticism from fans and analysts alike.
Despite the criticism, Breslow maintained that there were no viable opportunities to improve the team's 2025 outlook while trading major league players. Instead, the Red Sox chose to rely on their strong and deep farm system to enhance the roster.
The Red Sox made only two acquisitions, with Dustin May arriving from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals. The lack of offensive or defensive reinforcements left many fans and analysts feeling frustrated and disappointed.
In comparison, other contending teams were more aggressive in bolstering their rosters at the deadline. The New York Yankees added a new third baseman, Ryan McMahon, and several notable relievers, including David Bednar, Jake Bird, and Camillo Doval. The Seattle Mariners nabbed two of the top hitters on the market, Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor. The Texas Rangers beefed up their rotation with Merrill Kelly and their bullpen with Phil Maton and Danny Coulombe.
The Red Sox find themselves in a tight race, a game back of the Yankees for the top American League wild card spot and 1 ½ games up over the Mariners and Rangers. If the Red Sox fail to hold onto or improve their postseason positioning, Breslow's deadline approach may be held against him heading into the offseason.
Breslow expressed understanding for the frustration and disappointment of the fans but told reporters that there is not a lot of sympathy for how hard they tried to get deals across the line. The Red Sox's approach at the trade deadline will undoubtedly be a topic of debate as the team continues to fight for a playoff spot.
