In an unexpected turn of events, UFC legend B.J. Penn has issued a challenge to fellow fighter Nik Lentz, with the proposed back market fight not forming part of the main events at UFC 197.

The challenge, made through an Instagram post, dates back to October 2015, with Penn accusing Lentz of making a '#bringpennback' hashtag and asking him to back up his words. This recent call-out appears to be related to perceived slights made by Lentz.

Penn, who retired after his fight against Frankie Edgar in July 2014, has been vocal about Lentz's comments and a poem allegedly written about him. The details of the proposed back market fight, such as the weight class and the specific rules, were not specified in the Instagram post.

The last fight for Penn was against Frankie Edgar, a fight he lost in the first round. Prior to this, he had a year layoff before fighting Rory MacDonald in December 2012. Unlike his fight against Edgar, Penn lasted all three rounds in the fight against MacDonald, but ultimately lost.

Meanwhile, UFC 197 is headlined by the featherweight champion Conor McGregor vs. lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos. Holly Holm is defending her women's bantamweight title against Miesha Tate in the event.

Interestingly, on March 5, 2016, in Las Vegas, Penn was challenged by Frankie Edgar after coming out of retirement.

In a separate development, Nik Lentz won a split decision over Danny Castillo last month. The specifics of the challenge between Lentz and Penn, if it materialises, are yet to be announced.

The news of Penn's challenge to Lentz adds an intriguing subplot to UFC 197, with fans eagerly awaiting further details about the potential back market fight.
