Mistaken Win: Incumbent Marc Buchholz Keeps Mülheim Mayor Post After Recount
In a dramatic turn of events, incumbent Marc Jacobs (CDU) has been confirmed as the winner of the runoff election for Mayor in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The results were initially incorrectly announced, leading to a recount that reversed the victory for SPD candidate Nadia Khalaf.
The election committee discovered an error during the vote count, with votes in a Mülheim mail-in district incorrectly attributed. This mistake led to Nadia Khalaf being initially declared the winner with less than 70 votes and 50.07% of the vote. However, after a recount, Marc Jacobs emerged victorious by more than 100 votes.
Marc Jacobs, who was first elected mayor in 2020, will remain in office. The corrected results have now been confirmed, reversing the initial announcement that Khalaf had won. The election committee is set to officially confirm the corrected result on Thursday.
This is the second scandal to hit North Rhine-Westphalia's municipal elections, highlighting the importance of thorough vote counting and verification processes. Marc Jacobs will continue his term as mayor of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
