On Saturday, two football powerhouses will square off in a first-ever matchup as Mississippi State hosts Northern Illinois in Starkville, Mississippi.

The Bulldogs, coached by Jeff Lebby, have started the season strong with a record of 3-0, following a 63-0 rout of Alcorn State. Their opponent, Northern Illinois, led by Thomas Hammock, has had a challenging season so far, winning only one game against Holy Cross (19-17) before losing to Maryland and taking a bye week.

Despite their struggles this season, Northern Illinois has a reputation for pulling off upsets against Power 4 schools. Last year, they made history by upsetting No. 5 Notre Dame, marking their first victory over a top-10 foe and making them the first MAC program to beat a top-5 team.

Mississippi State, on the other hand, has not started 4-0 since 2014. However, their opponents this season have all been outscored by a combined score of 158-3, making for an easy start to the season.

The game presents a great test for Mississippi State, as Northern Illinois' defense has been strong against the run, allowing only one touchdown on the ground so far this season. NIU is averaging 179 rushing yards per game, ranking 59th in the NCAA, and their run defense is physically strong and does not stay blocked easily.

NIU's run defense has been particularly effective at getting off blocks, making it difficult for opponents to dent the interior. This could pose a challenge for Mississippi State's Bulldogs, who are known for their middle linebacker and weakside linebacker playing downhill.

One player to watch for Mississippi State is quarterback Blake Shapen, who has thrown a touchdown pass in 18 consecutive games, the second-longest active streak behind Iowa State’s Rocco Becht (22).

The game will be a significant test for Northern Illinois, who are three-touchdown underdogs against Mississippi State. Nevertheless, the Huskies will be eager to prove their worth and continue their tradition of surprising Power 4 schools.

The upcoming matchup is sure to be an exciting one, offering a unique contrast between two teams with different seasons so far. Fans can expect a thrilling game as Mississippi State aims to complete a spotless non-conference schedule by winning against Northern Illinois.
