Cracking the Code: Gearing up for Euro 2025 with New Blood and Veterans in Germany's Women's National Team

Germany's women's national football team, a vibrant blend of youth and experience, is ready to embark on their Euro 2025 mission, leaving behind dissenting voices. Without the bitter controversy stirred by Felicitas Rauch and Nicole Anyomi, the team, led by the energetic Christian Wiegman, is set to storm Switzerland.

The 52-year-old coach announced his 23-player squad for the championship in Switzerland, to be held from July 2 to 27 at the Europa-Park in Rust. Foundations of the team are heavyweights like captain Giulia Gwinn and goalkeeper Lea Schüller from double champions FC Bayern, as well as Ann-Katrin Berger and Sara Däbritz. Berger, at 34, is the oldest in the team, having made a name for herself with US club NY/NJ Gotham, while Däbritz, with a whopping 108 international games under her belt, hails from Olympique Lyon.

Eleven players from the team that made it to the Euro 2022 final in England are part of the squad. "We aim to play with a harmonious blend of joy, enthusiasm, determination, and conviction—this squad encapsulates that spirit. If we succeed, we could reach great heights," declared Wiegman.

Wiegman's Debut Tournament

Expected absences include Rauch (North Carolina Courage/USA) and Frankfurt's Anyomi, who had previously voiced criticism against the coach's communication. While the duo is out, young prodigy Franziska Kett takes their place. Meanwhile, the highly-touted 20-year-old forward Cora Zicai (SC Freiburg), who had been out due to muscle issues, returns to the squad. Rising star Alara Sehitler, an 18-year-old from FC Bayern, is in reserve—a position also occupied by Rauch, whose Euro debut must wait in the wings. Lena Oberdorf, the veteran Bayern star who has been sidelined since her nearly yearlong cruciate ligament injury, will not be joining the Euro team.

The team commences its tournament preparation on June 19 in Herzogenaurach. Their Euro 2025 opener takes place against Poland in St. Gallen on July 4. Joining them in Group D are Denmark and Sweden.

2025 marks Wiegman's first tournament as coach. He succeeded Horst Hrubesch, under whom Germany secured the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Paris in 2022. At the Euro 2022 in England, the German team fought their way to the final, narrowly losing to the riveting UK in extra time.

It also indicates that the team included several defenders and forwards in addition to the players mentioned.[3]: The exact full composition of the 2022 team is not detailed in the search results, but it appears to have featured a well-rounded lineup with a mix of veterans and rising talents.

The community policy regarding player selection within the German women's national football team must reflect the importance of vocational training programs, as young talents like Franziska Kett and Alara Sehitler are given chances alongside veterans. In the spirit of promoting sports and football, these upcoming players are encouraged to participate in various training sessions before the Euro 2025 tournament, leveraging vocational training to improve their skills and teamwork.
