Missing Teenager Safely Returned from Wilderness Expedition Following 24-Hour Ordeal; Lost en route to the restroom during family camping adventure

In a heartwarming turn of events, 14-year-old Maya Suisse, who went missing during a family camping trip in Utah's Uinta Mountains, has been found safe after a large-scale search-and-rescue operation.

The ordeal began when Maya disappeared while returning from the campsite bathroom and became disoriented. The search for Maya involved a massive operation by land and air, with Duchesne County search and rescue and their sheriff's department leading the effort. Ground crews flown in by helicopter, horse teams, and local volunteers joined forces to scour the 'super dense' terrain, making visibility and navigation extremely difficult.

Maya spent the night in the woods, trying to stay warm by curling up on a rock and pulling her shirt over her legs. Remarkably, she was found near a well-known trail that has been the site of past disappearances. A helicopter crew assisting the search spotted Maya near this trail.

Maya's mother, Tami Suisse, was relieved and grateful to have her daughter safe. Maya herself was in good physical condition and was even laughing and joking with rescuers when found.

Maya's sister, Brittany Suisse, described Maya as a fairly experienced backpacker. Brittany remained hopeful during the search, believing that Maya might be circling the area. Brittany's Facebook post about the search was flooded with supportive messages.

Following her safe return, Maya spoke to KUTV and KSL-TV, expressing her relief and gratitude. She also described the night in the woods as cold. Maya is looking forward to a hot shower after her ordeal.

In light of this incident, it's important to remember some key tips for hiking in the Uintas. Before leaving your campsite area, take note of distinctive landmarks or use a GPS device/smartphone app to mark your exact spot. Stick to marked trails when walking to the bathroom or other locations, and carry a reliable navigation tool like a GPS device with offline maps or a compass and physical trail map. Pay attention to terrain and landmarks, and travel with company or inform others about your plans.

In the event of getting lost, Crowley offered advice to go to an empty field instead of hiding in the trees or staying on trails.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of careful preparation, awareness of surroundings, and having navigation aids when venturing into the wilderness.

Sports teams should consider implementing mandatory safety training programs for their players during outdoor camping trips, given the intricate terrains and potential hazards. Meanwhile, keep an eye on the latest news updates about the recovery efforts of Maya Suisse, who demonstrated extraordinary resilience while surviving in the wild for a night.
