They were last seen on Sunday morning on the Abol Trail, specifically the Tablelands heading toward the summit.

The search for them commenced on Monday morning after their vehicle was still found parked at the trailhead. Involved in the extensive hunt were numerous Maine game wardens, including the Maine Warden Service Search and Rescue team, the Maine Warden Service K9 team, the Maine Forest Service, and the Maine Army National Guard. An aerial search was also conducted.

Tim Keiderling's body was found on Tuesday afternoon in the Tablelands near the summit of Katahdin by a Maine Warden Service K9 search team. Esther Keiderling's body was discovered on Wednesday in a wooded area of Katahdin's Tableland area between two known trails.
