Miss Universe Nicaragua Franchise Owner under Fire for Alleged Conspiracy

According to a statement released by the National Police, Karen Celebertti, the head of the Miss Nicaragua beauty pageant, along with her husband and son, have been accused of conspiring against the government.

Celebertti's local Miss Universe organization was allegedly used to turn the beauty contest into a political trap and a politically financed ambush by foreign agents, as stated in a police declaration.

Reuters was unable to immediately reach Celebertti or her representatives for comment.

Sheynnis Palacios, from Nicaragua, was crowned Miss Universe 2023 at the 72nd Miss Universe competition on November 18, 2023, in San Salvador, El Salvador.

Celebertti was denied entry on October 10. Her husband and son were arrested in Nicaragua on January 21 on charges of conspiracy from 2018. The authorities claimed they had a role in organizing protests against the government.

On November 18, Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua was crowned Miss Universe, making her the first Middle American to hold the title. Palacios has not returned to Nicaragua since her victory and now resides in New York.

Nicaraguans took to the streets to celebrate Palacios' victory. However, the organizers are now accused of attempting to organize protests against the government.

The government banned protests in 2018 following widespread demonstrations against the government, which were violently suppressed. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights reported over 320 deaths as a result of these violent suppressions.

While the exact nature of the conspiracy charges against Karen Celebertti is not fullyclear, it is evident that her resignation and the subsequent actions by the Nicaraguan regime are heavily politically motivated.
