San Diego Padres Shuffle Pitching Staff, Recall Sean Reynolds

The San Diego Padres have made a change in their pitching staff, recalling right-hander Sean Reynolds from Triple-A El Paso. This move comes following a less-than-impressive debut by JP Sears, who was acquired from the Athletics last week.

Sears made his debut with the Padres on Monday, but his outing was far from what the team had hoped for. In five innings, he allowed 10 hits and 5 runs, including one home run, with 4 strikeouts. The Padres lost the game 6-2, marking one of their losses this season with a score of 6-2.

Despite Sears' effort and competitiveness, the Padres prioritized bullpen depth and other rotation options. Nestor Cortes and Michael King, who were returning from injury, were among the options considered. There was also talk of a six-man rotation, but concerns about bullpen sustainability and roster spots limited Sears' opportunities.

As a result, Sears has been optioned back to Triple-A El Paso. His ERA across his combined starts for the Athletics and Padres in 2025 was 5.12 with a 1.31 WHIP through 23 starts and 116 innings pitched.

Reynolds' role on the San Diego Padres' roster is likely as a replacement for Sears. The acquisition of Sears and reliever Mason Miller by the Padres was in exchange for a package of prospects, including highly regarded shortstop Leo De Vries.

With Reynolds' recall, the current roster of the San Diego Padres now includes him. Reynolds' return to the major leagues was likely in response to Sears' poor performance, and he will be hoping to make a positive impact on the team.
