Minnesota Wild Signs Kaprizov to $136M Record Deal
The Minnesota Wild have signed left wing Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million extension, making it the richest contract in NHL history. The deal surpasses Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl's $14 million annual average salary over eight years, and Alex Ovechkin's previous record of $124 million over 13 years. Kaprizov's annual average salary of $17 million is the highest since the NHL's cap era began in 2005.
Kaprizov, who joined the Wild from Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), has been a standout player for the team. He won the Calder Trophy in the 2020-21 season, becoming the first Wild player to win the award. In his career, Kaprizov has 386 points in 319 regular-season games and 21 points in 25 playoff games. The new contract will see Kaprizov count $17 million against the salary cap beginning next season.
The Wild's previous longest and richest contracts were signed by Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in 2012, with identical 13-year, $98 million deals. However, the buyouts of their contracts in 2021 cost the Wild about 17% of their salary cap in the last two seasons.
With this new contract, Kirill Kaprizov will remain with the Minnesota Wild until the 2024-25 season. His exceptional skills and contributions to the team have earned him this historic deal. The Wild's management is confident that Kaprizov's presence will continue to strengthen the team's performance in the coming seasons.
