Minnesota Lynx acquire DiJonai Carrington from Wings in pursuit of NBA title
The Dallas Wings have made a significant move in the WNBA, trading guard DiJonai Carrington to the Minnesota Lynx. In return, the Wings have acquired forward Diamond Miller, guard Karlie Samuelson, and a 2027 second-round draft pick.
Carrington, who was nicknamed "Seatbelt" for her strong defensive play, struggled to find the expanded role she sought after joining Dallas. With the Lynx, she stands to bolster their defense and add offensive pressure, enhancing their chances to secure the top seed and a championship run this season.
Miller, a high draft pick from 2022, is expected to get more playing time with the Wings, a team more oriented toward development than immediate championship contention. The addition of Samuelson and a future draft pick also helps the Wings further strengthen their roster and assets for upcoming seasons.
Carrington averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals during her stint with the Connecticut Sun before joining the Wings. However, her time in Dallas was not as successful. She ranked last among 53 WNBA players with at least 200 half-court possessions with 0.634 points per possession. The Dallas Wings also posted a -12.4 net rating in the 497 minutes Carrington played this season, and she had a team-worst net rating of -12.4.
In contrast, the Wings posted a near-even 0.4 net rating in the 668 minutes without Carrington. This trade is part of the Wings' focus on building for the future around their No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers. Head coach Chris Koclanes acknowledged that Carrington's intangible impact was not consistently achieved yet.
Karlie Samuelson, a career 39.2% three-point shooter, is currently sidelined after undergoing surgery on her left foot. The Wings also acquired a 2027 first-round pick from Las Vegas and a 2027 second-round pick from Minnesota in the trades. The Dallas Wings have waived center Teaira McCowan to finalize the trade.
The Minnesota Lynx, on the other hand, are betting on Carrington's defensive impact translating more effectively in a veteran-laden environment. They are a title contender, and the addition of Carrington is expected to strengthen their championship-contending roster with an improved defensive and offensive guard presence.
