16-Year-Old Hockey Prodigy Max Cullen Commits to University of Minnesota

In an exciting announcement, 16-year-old Max Cullen, a standout forward for Moorhead High School's Spuds, has committed to the University of Minnesota. Cullen made the announcement via Instagram on Wednesday night, marking a significant milestone in his promising hockey career.

Cullen, who is entering his junior season at Moorhead High School, had a stellar sophomore year, contributing 11 goals and 17 assists that helped the Spuds claim the Minnesota boys hockey state championship in Class AA last season. His versatility on the ice, as he can play center, wing, and even take on defensive roles, has been a key factor in his success.

Jon Ammerman, the varsity head coach of the Spuds, noted that Cullen really emerged during the second half of last season due to his versatility. Ammerman's observation seems to have caught the eyes of scouts, as Cullen's play during the state tournament likely played a role in the interest he received from Division I hockey teams after being eligible to be contacted.

Cullen's hockey pedigree is impressive, with his uncle, Matt Cullen, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame. Matt Cullen, born in Virginia, Minnesota, and grew up in Moorhead, has undoubtedly been a source of inspiration for Max. Cullen's father, Mark, also had a notable career, playing 38 games in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Florida Panthers between 2005 and 2012. Mark Cullen was also a captain at Colorado College.

The USHL rights of Max Cullen are owned by the Muskegon Lumberjacks, and he was selected by the team in the eighth round of the league's future's draft in 2024. Cullen's decision to commit to Minnesota Duluth was influenced by the facilities, the players, the culture, and the great coaches.

As Cullen looks forward to getting back on the ice with the Spuds this winter alongside his brother, hockey fans can expect more impressive performances from this talented young player. Moorhead High School's season opener is against Wayzata in the Turkey Trot Tournament on Friday, Nov. 21 in Plymouth, Minnesota. With Cullen leading the way, the Spuds are sure to be a team to watch this season.
