Ministry of Finance still in favor of new building at Burg Giebichenstein

The Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of Finance's commitment to construct a new building for the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle remains unshaken. Finance Minister Michael Richter (CDU) boldly declared in Magdeburg's state parliament that a new tender would be issued. The initial design concept, originating from a Munich architecture firm, which had won an international competition, was deemed excessively expensive. The anticipated studio and workshop building, spanning over 3000 square meters, held a financial estimate that escalated from €31 million to over €53 million. This astronomical cost increase was deemed economically impractical, consequently terminating the process by Richter. The university's personnel have been notified and negotiations are ongoing. Approximately 1000 students from Germany and abroad study at the Halle-based institution.

Regarding alternative cost-effectiveness proposals for the intended new building, the sources do not offer explicit insights. However, universities like the University of Bremen, Humboldt University of Berlin, and the University of Cologne, all in Germany, offer affordable tuition fees or even no tuition fees, providing a viable model to emulate.
