Germany's New Minister for Digital Affairs and State Modernization Takes Charge

In a significant move, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has appointed Karsten Wildberger, a former top manager of MediaMarktSaturn, as the Minister of State for Digital Affairs and State Modernization. This new role will see Wildberger overseeing the modernization of administration, reducing bureaucracy, managing data traffic, and improving networks.

Wildberger's ministry will also be responsible for improving networks and modernizing online citizen services. The focus on digital affairs and state modernization is a shift from earlier arrangements, highlighting Merz's commitment to streamlining government processes and enhancing digital infrastructure.

The minister has made it clear that he sees the role of the state as one that should trust citizens and businesses more, entrusting them with more responsibilities. He has emphasized the need for a consistent removal of bureaucratic concrete that has accumulated over decades.

In a letter sent on August 5, 2025, Wildberger requested plans for bureaucratic reduction from the ministers of the federal government by September 15, 2025. The specialist department of his ministry will also contact the departments to inquire about the current status of these projects.

The focus of a cabinet meeting in October is still set to be "deregulation and de-bureaucratization", and the Ministry of Digital Affairs and State Modernization will play a significant role in these efforts. The German Press Agency has access to this letter, underscoring the importance of these initiatives.

With Wildberger at the helm, the ministry is poised to bring about significant changes in the digital landscape and administration of Germany, making it more efficient and citizen-friendly.
