Minister of Japanese Education Expresses Regret Over High School Baseball Harassment Incidents

In the world of Japanese education, a bullying incident at Koryo High School in Hiroshima Prefecture has sparked concern and discussion. The incident, which occurred in January within the school's baseball dormitory, has led to a series of administrative actions and calls for cultural reform.

The school reported the violent bullying to the Japan High School Baseball Federation and the Hiroshima High School Baseball Federation in February. As a result, the national federation issued a stern warning and reprimand to Koryo High School by March.

The bullying incident, which involved several second-year teammates, was particularly severe. It resulted in the victim, a first-year student, being transferred to another school in March, after the assailants had apologised.

The school principal publicly warned against the circulation of unsubstantiated and defamatory social media posts, highlighting the harm to uninvolved students. Even a bomb threat was received against the baseball club dormitory, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

In response to the scandal's exposure on social media, Koryo High School officially withdrew its baseball team from the national summer championship to focus on addressing the issue.

The Japanese Education Minister, Toshiko Abe, expressed deep regret over the incident and urged the high school to care for the victim and take measures to prevent future incidents. She also called for a cultural shift away from a "win-at-all-costs" attitude towards a more responsible educational environment.

The incident has led to calls for stricter anti-bullying measures in Japanese schools. In June, a third-party investigation was established to examine further allegations of violence within the team, including claims of abuse by the coach and other players. This suggests a systemic issue within the dormitory setting.

Social media posts that slander the perpetrators using their real names are increasing, prompting warnings from public figures, including Education Minister Abe, who fears new human rights abuse cases.

The bullying incident at Koryo High School serves as a stark reminder of the need for schools, sports organisations, and society as a whole to take a stand against bullying and violence. The wider baseball and educational authorities are pushing for stronger preventive measures and cultural reforms to eradicate such incidents in high school sports.

A photograph of the affected student, taken before the bullying incident at Koryo High School, was shared on media platforms, sparking empathy and support from the public. This incident emphasizes the importance of education in promoting a culture that values sports, respect, and individual dignity.

The Japanese government's plan for cultural reform in schools includes stricter anti-bullying measures and a shift in the sports culture, promoting fair play and sportsmanship, as seen in baseball, starting from Koryo High School.
