Environmental Minister Backhaus of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Faces Allegations - Minister of Environment Backhaus Faces Potential Legal Action in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Gears are turning in Rostock as the local prosecution prepares to slap charges on Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Till Backhaus (SPD), for the culling of a wolf in April 2020.
According to a spokesperson for the prosecution, Backhaus is accused of breaching the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Similar accusations are being leveled against several employees of the ministry and the district of Rostock, who, it is alleged, were influenced by Backhaus to taken out "a wild, strictly protected animal."
Backhaus denies the accusations, attributing the slaying to a wolf that had been repeatedly approaching a farm dog and "seemed to have been mating with it." He argued that the danger of creating wolf hybrids posed a threat to the wolf population, thus justifying the district's shooting permit.
All Eyes on the Parliamentary Committee
In a surprising turn of events, the legal committee of the Schwerin state parliament has backed the removal of Backhaus' parliamentary immunity. The final decision rests with the state parliament.
A post-mortem examination disproved Backhaus' claim; the wolf was not pregnant. The wolf-killing issue is also being debated in the administrative courts. Following the Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's declaration of the shooting as illegal in February this year, the ministry and the district filed an appeal with the Federal Administrative Court. Yet, the prosecution maintains that the legality of the shooting is independent of the court's decision.
