Minister of Aviation Directs Airlines to Deny Flight to Nigerian Musician, Wasiu Ayinde, for Obstructing Aircraft at Abuja Airport

On August 7, 2025, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, announced via his official X account that King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as Kwam 1, has been placed on a no-fly list. This decision came following an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on August 5, 2025.

The incident involved Kwam 1 allegedly obstructing a ValueJet aircraft during boarding for a flight to Lagos (Flight VK 201). The musician reportedly refused to comply with multiple warnings from Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and the flight captain, leading to the situation escalating. The flight captain eventually ordered the aircraft doors closed after boarding was completed, but Kwam 1 moved to the front of the aircraft and blocked it from taxiing.

The matter took a turn when Kwam 1 allegedly spilled the contents of an unidentified liquid substance on one of the security officers. The substance was later confirmed to be alcohol, violating aviation regulations.

The incident at the airport led to the temporary suspension of the licenses of the aircraft's pilot and captain by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for taxiing while the tarmac was not fully cleared. The NCAA has since taken over the investigation into the incident.

In his post on his official X account, Minister Keyamo described this act as a severe breach of safety protocols. He criticised the decision to sanction only the flight crew, emphasising that both parties violated international civil aviation safety standards and must be held equally accountable.

The Minister also stated that Kwam 1 will remain on the no-fly list pending further and full investigation. Any airline that fails to comply with this directive risks having its operating license withdrawn. The NCAA has been instructed to notify all domestic and international airlines of the restriction.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) provided details on the circumstances that led to the confrontation. The directive was met with public criticism, with many calling for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.

As the investigation continues, it is hoped that this incident will serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols in the aviation industry.
