Scottish Government Minister Jamie Hepburn Resigns Following Alleged Assault on Tory MSP

Jamie Hepburn, the Scottish Government's parliamentary business minister, has resigned following an alleged assault on Tory MSP Douglas Ross. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was revealed during First Minister's Questions on Thursday.

In his resignation letter, Mr. Hepburn admitted that he had acted against his own "personal code of conduct." He expressed regret for his interaction with Mr. Ross, stating that it fell short of his usual standard of courteous interaction with colleagues. Douglas Ross, on the other hand, described Mr. Hepburn's behavior as "completely inappropriate and unacceptable."

Douglas Ross made a formal complaint and asked the First Minister, John Swinney, to refer the incident to the independent advisors on the ministerial code. In his letter to Mr. Hepburn, Mr. Swinney acknowledged Mr. Hepburn's slip in his usual approach of courtesy and respect. He also expressed gratitude for Mr. Hepburn's work in the government for over a decade.

Mr. Hepburn's resignation took effect immediately. The First Minister accepted his resignation with "personal regret." The parliamentary authorities have confirmed that Mr. Hepburn will be eligible for a "resettlement grant" of £8,769 following his time in government.

The incident between Mr. Hepburn and Mr. Ross resulted in Hepburn putting his hands on Ross and using "industrial language." Douglas Ross stated that Mr. Hepburn made "the correct decision" to resign.

It is not specified in publicly available information who the politician who received a relocation allowance of 8,769 pounds after resigning from the government is.

In a separate incident, Douglas Ross used parliamentary procedure to delay a vote on landmark government legislation by demanding a ministerial statement on seagull attacks and government action.

Mr. Hepburn's resignation comes after a demand for an investigation into his behavior. It remains to be seen who will replace him in his role as the Scottish Government's parliamentary business minister.
