Easing the Teacher's Burden with AI: Minister Hubig's Vision for Rhineland-Palatinate's Schools
Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be seen as an opportunity to alleviate the pressure on teachers, according to Rhineland-Palatinate Education Minister Stefanie Hubig of the SPD. As she told the German Press Agency in Mainz, AI is an inevitable part of our lives and it's time we learned how to use it wisely in our classrooms.
Hubig announced that her state will make the "fobizz" platform accessible to teachers and students from February 2023. This platform offers free access to AI tools and provides helpful tips on how to effectively utilize them. Rhineland-Palatinate becomes the second federal state after Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to adopt this strategy.
Hubig emphasized that incorporating digital media into schools should simply become common practice. Providing a device due to the Digital Pact isn't enough; teachers should also know how to use it responsibly during lessons. That's a process, she said.
The State Pedagogical Institute's advanced training courses focused on digitalization and media proved incredibly popular last year with 667 events and over 19,700 participants. In 2021, the figure increased to 722 events and more than 22,000 participants.
Digitalization and AI are set to revolutionize education in Rhineland-Palatinate. The state is actively integrating AI to enhance teaching methods, and the Interior Ministry is working on an "AI-Humanitas: Enabling AI-Skills" program to build expertise and confidence among administrative staff and citizens.
