Controversial Wolf Killing: Minister Till Backhaus Accused of Legality Violation

It's been half a decade since the controversial death of a she-wolf in the Rostock district, sparking accusations against Minister Till Backhaus. Recent developments suggest that the Minister, a member of the SPD, could be facing charges for allegedly violating the Federal Nature Conservation Act. The prosecution in Rostock has expressed that there's enough evidence to substantiate their suspicions.

The Rostock prosecution's spokesperson confirmed the pending charges, stressing that Minister Backhaus might have manipulated the district office responsible for issuing the shooting permit for the she-wolf. The Legal Committee of the state parliament has recommended suspending Backhaus' parliamentary immunity at the prosecution's behest, pending the approval of the parliament in the upcoming week.

Minister Stands by Decision

In the aftermath of the 2020 wolf cub shooting, Minister Backhaus defended his actions, citing species protection as the rationale. He reiterated this stance in Schwerin, stating, "in March 2020, a shooting permit was granted for a wolf cub that repeatedly approached a farm dog and apparently mated with it. This posed a risk of hybridization, endangering the wolf population."

A postmortem examination revealed that the she-wolf was not pregnant, and earlier attempts to capture and collar the animal had failed.

Prosecution Questions Preventive Killing

Although initially deemed legal, the shooting was reevaluated by the Higher Administrative Court in Greifswald, which led to the prosecution's involvement. The prosecution contends that only the killing of wolf hybrids is permissible in the name of species protection; preventive killing of a presumably pregnant she-wolf is unlawful.

Minister Backhaus expressed his confusion over the Rostock prosecution's decision to indict him. "The allegations are factually incorrect. The parties involved acted lawfully within their official duties to prevent hybridization. This has also been confirmed by a ruling of the Administrative Court," Backhaus emphasized. The legality of the permit to shoot the wolf cub is now under appeal review at the Federal Administrative Court.
