Ah, Bloody 'Operation Mincemeat': The Musical Comedy Sailing Around the Globe!
"Mincemeat Operation Next in Global Unfolding"
Gear up, theater enthusiasts! The hit musical comedy, Operation Mincemeat, is setting sail on a world tour, taking over stages in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, China, Mexico, New Zealand, and more! This epic production, which started at London's 77-seat New Diorama Theatre in 2019, is inspired by the bizarre, war-altering operation of the same name during WWII.
In 1943, with most of Europe under Nazi rule, the Allied forces were determined to seize Sicily, planning their attacks secretly to avoid massive resistance. A bizarre, stranger-than-fiction plan emerged: the British naval intelligence created a corpse, gave it a detailed fake identity, and equipped it with mission papers revealing a fake invasion plan to deceive the Nazis. The body was found off the Spanish coast, and the plan worked, shifting the war's tide.
The musical brainchild of theater collective SplitLip—from war comedy veterans Natasha Hodgson, Zoë Roberts, David Cumming, and the incredibly talented Felix Hagan—Operation Mincemeat offers a madcap musical comedy filled with heart. "We fell so in love with this story, and we knew we had to bring it to life amidst laughter and music," says Hodgson.
The group initially connected at Warwick University, created and performed horror comedy shows, and later found inspiration in a Stuff You Should Know podcast about Operation Mincemeat. Five weeks at the New Diorama Theatre and a cast led by Hodgson, Roberts, and Cumming set the theater world ablaze, leading to multiple transfers and a devoted fan base, the so-called "Mincefluencers."
After winning Olivier Awards for Best Musical and individual performances on the UK's West End, the Broadway debut in 2023 was met with enthusiastic audiences and four Tony Award nominations. Over 300 Mincefluencers even flew to New York for the first performance! In a nod to its humble beginnings, the worldwide tour kick-starts at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester—the venue that initially nurtured the show's development.
"We've been desperate to pay them back since the moment they gave us our first shot," says Cumming. "Starting our world tour at The Lowry not only fulfills that dream, but it also means our mums can see the show—which is pretty fantastic, too!"
Despite the production's success, the memory of the real dead man, Glyndwr Michael, remains forever enshrined in the makers' hearts. They cherish the role they play in preserving his legacy and ensuring his story continues to resonate through history. "Every night we say his name in front of hundreds of people on both sides of the Atlantic," says Roberts. "That, in itself, is an immensely powerful tribute."
