Milwaukee Brewers' 12-Game Winning Streak Triggers Free Burger Giveaway

The Milwaukee Brewers extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 12-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. This impressive run has not only boosted the team's morale but also triggered a beloved local tradition – the free burger giveaway by George Webb, a popular restaurant chain in Wisconsin.

This tradition dates back to the 1940s when George Webb made a promise to give away free burgers if the Brewers ever won 12 games consecutively. The promise was formalised in 1965. This year, the promotion was held at all 23 of George Webb's Wisconsin locations, from 2 to 6 p.m.

Customers could enjoy a free hamburger during the event, and a limited menu with special deals on additional burgers, fries, and drinks was available that day. For those who couldn't attend on August 20, vouchers for a free burger redeemable at a later date were also available. Estimates suggest that around 180,000 free burgers will be given away through the event and voucher redemptions.

The promotion is not only a celebration of the Brewers' success but also a way to connect the community around the team's milestone. Thousands lined up at locations like 6181 S. Howell Ave. in Milwaukee for the free burgers, and the event was supported by local fans, including some city officials.

For pitcher Brandon Woodruff, the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates was particularly important. A win would have maintained his perfect record on the season. He mentioned that he wanted to win those burgers for the city.

The Brewers have come close to achieving a 17-game winning streak on a few occasions, including this season. In 1987, the team started the season with 13 consecutive wins, and in 2018, they accomplished the feat of 13 consecutive wins. However, the promise of free burgers was still in effect at the time of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, dropping to 12 games by the time the Brewers closed the 2018 season with a total of 12 regular-season victories followed by 4 playoff wins.

The promise of free burgers was made decades ago, starting when Milwaukee was home to the minor-league Brewers of the old American Association. George Webb changed the promotion for free burgers to 12 games when the Brewers moved from Seattle in 1970. Despite the franchise moving to Atlanta in 1966, the promise of free burgers remained unfulfilled until now.

This news is sure to excite both the Brewers' fans and burger lovers in Wisconsin. Stay tuned for more updates as George Webb announces the details of the giveaway on Thursday afternoon.
