Millions stream Netflix to witness Crawford's victory over Canelo, as per the platform's announcement.
Canelo Alvarez's highly anticipated fight against Terence Crawford last weekend set new records in the world of boxing, with an impressive global viewership of 41.1 million.
The fight, promoted by Zuffa Boxing, co-founded by UFC president Dana White, was the third highest grossing commercially licensed event in boxing history. The event was licensed exclusively for commercial distribution in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico to Joe Hand Promotions.
In the United States, the fight started at 1 a.m. ET and ended at nearly 2 a.m. ET, attracting a significant audience. According to Netflix, the fight was seen by 36.6 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched boxing events in the streaming platform's history.
Interestingly, Netflix's record for streamed viewership was set last November with 60 million households reportedly streaming the Jake Paul/Mike Tyson card. However, the Canelo/Crawford fight surpassed the viewership of the Paul/Tyson undercard, which Netflix claimed was seen by nearly 50 million viewers.
The streamer has recently signed with VideoAmp, one of Nielsen's chief rivals, for the measurement of its programming, including WWE's Monday Night Raw. Nielsen, on the other hand, sources data from over 75 million devices in addition to its traditional panel of 42,000 homes and over 100,000 consumers.
Canelo Alvarez signed a four-fight, $400 million deal with Riyadh Season, earning him nearly $800 million in career earnings from fights and sponsorships. Alvarez made over $100 million for the bout, as announced by Alalshikh during the Friday press conference.
The Canelo/Crawford fight viewership tally includes 500,000 viewers who watched the fight card in bars, restaurants, casinos, and other hospitality establishments. Last Monday, YouTube revised its viewership totals for the Los Angeles Chargers' win over the Kansas City Chiefs from 16.2 million to 19.7 million viewers due to an internal technical issue.
The Jake Paul/Mike Tyson event gained infamy for numerous technical glitches and was called rigged by many fans, including some sports and Hollywood heavyweights. However, the Canelo/Crawford fight seemed to have avoided such issues, providing a smooth and enjoyable viewing experience for millions of boxing fans worldwide.
The streamer also hosted the third and final bout between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, which was seen by 6 million viewers around the world. As the dust settles on this historic weekend of boxing, fans eagerly await the next big event in the sport.
