Military Strategist Predicts Significant Advance Near Pokrovsk for Unspecified Forces
In the ongoing Ukraine conflict, Russian forces have recently made the largest land gain in over a year, capturing an area of 110 square kilometers in just 24 hours. However, peace negotiations following the recent meetings between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin remain stalled and uncertain.
Despite intensive diplomacy and some symbolic gestures, no meaningful breakthroughs towards peace have been achieved as of late August 2025. Putin's demands remain firm, insisting on Ukraine not joining NATO, no Western troops on Ukrainian soil, and control over the Donbas region.
The Kremlin has downplayed the likelihood of direct talks between Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with Foreign Minister Lavrov emphasizing Russia's insistence on playing a central role in any security guarantees for Ukraine.
Both leaders achieved some symbolic and tactical goals during their meetings with Trump. Putin’s diplomatic isolation was somewhat lifted, and Zelenskyy secured tentative US security guarantees without conceding territory. Yet, these did not translate into substantial diplomatic breakthroughs.
Right after these diplomatic efforts, Russia launched a massive missile strike on Ukraine, including an American-owned plant, signaling Moscow’s unwillingness to pause military operations without further pressure.
The upcoming summit between Trump and Putin will take place on Friday at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. Before the meeting, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has demanded robust security guarantees for Ukraine.
Germany, France, and Britain, as leaders of the "Coalition of the Willing," have also demanded "robust and credible security guarantees" for Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for the strengthening of the Ukrainian army to defend the country.
Germany is financing one of the support packages for Ukraine, consisting of US weapons and ammunition, worth up to 500 million US dollars. Militarily, Ukraine reported the recapture of two villages in the Sumy region, but Russia continues to make territorial gains, especially east of Dobropillia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj hopes for an immediate ceasefire and robust security guarantees for his country from the upcoming Alaska summit. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described a recent video conference with European heads of state and US President Donald Trump as "a very good discussion."
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated that the West and Ukraine are united in the goal of ending the war in Ukraine. However, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban does not see any prospects for success in Western efforts to achieve a Ukraine peace deal.
As the conflict continues, former NATO General Erhard Buhler has warned of the consequences of the deep Russian advance into Ukrainian defense lines north of Pokrovsk. Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly discussed his planned meeting with US President Donald Trump with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Russia has also introduced restrictions on calls via the messaging apps WhatsApp and Telegram. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky has described Putin's expressed desire for an end to the war as a bluff.
The stalemate in peace negotiations, ongoing military actions, and the upcoming US-Russia summit underscore the complexities and challenges in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
