Military spokesperson announces commencement of operations for capturing Gaza
In a move that could mark a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, the Israeli military has initiated a new offensive on Gaza City, with the aim of destroying Hamas's terror infrastructure within the city.
The offensive, which began in early September, saw the call-up of around 60,000 reservists, according to military sources. This move follows the Israeli security cabinet's approval of a plan for the takeover of Gaza at the beginning of August.
The conflict was triggered back in October 2023, when an attack by Hamas and other Islamic groups on Israel set off a chain of events that has led to the current situation. Since then, almost two years have passed, and almost all residents of the coastal strip have become internal refugees.
The Israeli army has been intensifying its preparatory measures for the takeover of Gaza City, with troops now occupying the outskirts of the city, the largest in the Gaza Strip. The offensive has already resulted in significant casualties, with around 1,200 people reported killed and more than 250 taken as hostages into the Gaza Strip.
The civilian population in Gaza City is facing a dire situation, with fears that the offensive will further worsen their already catastrophic conditions. Residents are being evacuated to temporary refugee camps in the center of the sealed-off Gaza Strip, according to media reports. Around one million people live in Gaza City, and it is estimated that around two million Palestinians live in total in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli military spokesman has stated that Hamas has been weakened significantly and has transformed from a military terrorist organization into a battered and weakened guerrilla organization. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the acceleration of the takeover of the city of Gaza, with the aim of ending the dependence of the population on Hamas.
The Israeli army has also stated that it aims to intensify the damage to Hamas in Gaza, suggesting that this offensive could mark a turning point in the ongoing conflict. However, the humanitarian impact of the offensive remains a significant concern, with the United Nations and other international organizations calling for an immediate ceasefire to protect civilians.
As the situation in Gaza City continues to unfold, it is clear that this offensive will have far-reaching consequences for both the Israeli and Palestinian populations. The international community must urgently address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
