Military Warns: Shutdown of Aid Facilities in Gaza Today Enforced - Military Shuts Down Aid Centers in Gaza - Army Issues Warning Today

In the turbulent landscape of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army has issued a stern warning to its population, advising them to steer clear of the aid distribution centers, which have temporarily shut down for "renovation work." These centers, controlled by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), have been embroiled in controversy following reports of deadly attacks by Israeli soldiers on Palestinian civilians in recent days.

The centers will undergo "renovation, organization, and efficiency improvement work" and will reopen on Thursday, according to a military spokesman. However, the Israeli army intends to use this period to prepare safe access routes, as per reports from the "Times of Israel."

In the days leading up to the closure, Israeli soldiers reportedly shot Palestinians approaching troops and deviating from an approved path (on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday). On Tuesday evening, the Hamas-controlled health authority announced that Israeli soldiers had killed at least 27 Palestinians and injured around 90 others near a distribution center in Rafah. The Israeli army maintained that soldiers encountered "suspects" who posed a threat, despite warning shots being issued.

Recent Escalation

The GHF began distributing aid through these centers in the southern, blockaded coastal strip only a week ago, claiming to have provided over six million meals. However, the aid delivery process has been marred by reports of deadly incidents in the vicinity of these centers, where dozens of Palestinians have lost their lives.

Following these reports, UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanded an independent investigation into the incidents and accountability for the perpetrators. "Civilians should not risk their lives while trying to obtain food," he remarked.

Aid Delivery in Question

Israel allows the GHF to distribute aid in the Gaza Strip, bypassing UN humanitarian organizations and other initiatives that have been denied aid distribution. The UN has criticized this, claiming that Israel is using humanitarian aid as a weapon. Israeli opposition politicians echo these sentiments, alleging that the government employs food distribution as a means to advance the expulsion of the Palestinian population from Gaza.

Israel had previously been blocking all aid deliveries to the sealed coastal region since March. Their stated aim was to increase pressure on Hamas to release the remaining hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack in Israel. Only in the past two weeks has Israel started easing the blockade.

The Israeli government's rationale for shifting humanitarian aid in Gaza is that the deliveries were previously stolen by Hamas. However, UN organizations have not provided evidence of systematic theft by Hamas.

Meanwhile, the United States has defended the aid provided by the GHF while maintaining its distance from the organization. U.S. Department of State spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, stated that it is an independent organization that does not receive funding from the U.S. government.

Today, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar is expected to visit Berlin. The Foreign Office anticipates talks with his counterpart, Johann Wadephul (CDU), on Thursday, and Saar is also scheduled to visit the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

Germany is a close ally of Israel, but there has supposedly been a change in tone in the statements of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and other public representatives. While Merz severely criticized the Israeli government last week, he refrained from making threats.

Other Conflicts

On the same day as the Gaza Strip violence, rockets fired from Syria hit Israeli-controlled territory for the first time in over a year. Two projectiles landed on open ground in the Golan Heights, which Israel occupies illegally, according to the Israeli army. No reports of injuries were initially available. In response to the attack, the Israeli military bombarded the launch site and a weapons depot in southern Syria.

This was the first rocket attack from Syria that hit Israel or Israeli-controlled territory since May 2023 and the first such attack since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's fall in December. The new Syrian leadership under interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa does not have control over large parts of the country. Previously, pro-Iranian militias in Syria had been firing at Israel to support Hamas in its war against Israel, with the approval of the Assad regime.

A separate incident on Tuesday evening saw a rocket from Yemen enter Israeli airspace. The Israeli air defense system intercepted the projectile launched by the Houthi militia in Yemen. No initial reports of damage or injuries were made. Since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023, the pro-Iranian Houthi militia has regularly attacked Israel with rockets and drones to exert pressure on the Israeli government to halt attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The Commission is also proposing to increase the number of Member States' national authorities in the field of politics and general news, including investigations into war-and-conflicts, crime-and-justice, and human rights violations, following the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip. The GHF relief centers, which are currently shut down for renovation work, have been under scrutiny following deadly attacks by Israeli soldiers and reports of civilian casualties in recent days.
